Evaluating Your Need For Whole-House Dehumidification

In the summer, the air can become uncomfortably humid. High relative humidity during the warmer months of the year is completely natural, but the additional moisture makes the air feel even hotter than it actually is. Here’s how to tell whether you could benefit from adding a whole-house dehumidification system to your mid-Ohio home.

If you air condition your home in the summer and keep the windows closed most of the time, you can get an idea of whether you need a whole-house dehumidification system by checking the relative humidity in each room. A special device called a calibrated hygrometer measures relative humidity. If the hygrometer reads 50 percent relative humidity or higher, you could feel much more comfortable with the addition of a whole-house dehumidifier in your home.

Even without a hygrometer to read the relative humidity, you may be able to tell that access moisture is lingering in the air based on how comfortable your home is in the summer. Your air conditioner works to cool off your home and features a dehumidification feature, but it may not be able to keep up with moisture removal.

The result is a cool but clammy interior that fails to keep you comfortable. To counter the clammy feeling, many homeowners boost the air conditioner to cool off the space even more and remove a little additional moisture from the air. This increases energy bills and may still fail to solve the problem at hand.

That’s why so many mid-Ohio homeowners are investing in whole-house dehumidification systems. They cost very little to operate and you can set the dehumidifier to a certain relative humidity to accomplish the best comfort possible with the lowest impact on your energy bills.
