During the hot and muggy Mid-Ohio summer, you can't dawdle when faced with an A/C breakdown. When your cooling equipment starts giving you trouble, you have to quickly make the decision whether to have it repaired or invest in a new air conditioner. Carefully consider the following three factors to help make the choice between repairing or replacing a disabled A/C.
A/C age – Is your air conditioner nearing the end of its lifespan? Most cooling equipment can be expected to run between 10 and 15 years. The older your system becomes, the more likely you'll start experiencing declining operation or a total A/C breakdown. Additionally, you must keep in mind that older equipment may have replacement parts that have been discontinued. This can make repairs costly or altogether impossible.
System efficiency – In a world where everyone is looking to save on energy spending, the efficiency of your current equipment must be considered. Was your system running efficiently and effectively prior to your A/C breakdown? If not, a replacement may be in order. Even if it can be repaired, your equipment will never be more efficient than it was at the time of manufacture. Newer systems are designed to be more efficient and to promote energy savings. The older your equipment, the larger the improvement in efficiency – and the lower your energy bills – with new high-efficiency air conditioning.
Equipment condition - Evaluate the condition of your current cooling equipment. If your system has been showing signs of wearing down, or if your air conditioner was not regularly serviced with routine preventive maintenance, your options may be limited. No matter how great the technician, only so much can be done for an air conditioner that was not well maintained.
Making the decision to repair or replace your equipment after an A/C breakdown doesn't have to be difficult. When you consider these three factors, you'll be better able to make the best decision with confidence and ease.
