HVAC Deals Online -- Why You May Regret Your Purchase

When you need a new HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system for your home, chances are that you'll be doing some research to find the unit that works best for your situation and pocketbook. It may be tempting to take HVAC deals online seriously, especially if you find really low prices and good deals. However, the savings you earn from buying HVAC deals online could evaporate quickly once you get the unit.

There are a number of issues that you might experience if you buy your HVAC equipment online, including:

  • Difficulty finding a HVAC company to install it. Most HVAC companies won't install equipment if they're not an authorized dealer for it. When you see HVAC deals online, the odds of finding product support for your new system locally are slim. Any system that uses refrigerant in unsealed units, such as heat pumps, must be installed by a contractor with the proper licenses to handle the electrical load and the chemicals legally. Additionally, if you do find a local contractor to install your equipment, they may charge an inflated rate to make up for not making the sale.
  • No warranty protections. If you do find an HVAC company that will send a technician to install your new system, the company may not offer a warranty on their parts and labor, nor honor the manufacturer's warranty. A breakdown could wipe out any savings you achieve by buying online, since replacement parts for HVAC systems can be expensive.
  • Choosing the wrong size. When you go by the size of your old HVAC equipment, you could be ordering something too large for your home. In the past, builders installed systems that were too large, which causes then to be energy inefficient, and suffer premature system wear. HVAC installers use a system known as Manual J to calculate the precise heating and cooling load for your home, and then match equipment to it. HVAC deals online don't offer these load-calculating tools, which means that you could end up with a system that's an improper size, adding to your heating and cooling bills.
